The National Youth Development Council represents Zambia at high-level Pan-African Youth Union reform meeting

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Development Council (NYDC), Ms. Waana Kankinza, is currently attending the Extraordinary Meeting of National Youth Councils and Equivalent National Coordinating Mechanisms on the comprehensive reform of the Pan-African Youth Union (PYU). The meeting is taking place from 3rd to 6th May 2025 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

This gathering follows the First and Second Consultative Dialogues held in Rabat, Morocco, and Accra, Ghana, respectively, where stakeholders collectively acknowledged the urgent need to implement a comprehensive reform of the PYU—63 years after its inception in 1962.

The key objective is to restructure and remodel the PYU into a dynamic, inclusive, and robust continental coordinating mechanism that reflects the evolving realities of Africa’s youth development ecosystem. This direction aligns with the African Union’s 2023 Specialized Technical Committee’s call for structural reform and reconstitution of the PYU.

The Ouagadougou meeting aims to define the parameters and timelines for this reform agenda, propose a strategic plan, and enhance coherence between the PYU, its regional coordinating points, and national mechanisms. The goal is to foster synergies that accelerate the achievement of Africa’s youth development aspirations.

NYDC remains committed to ensuring that the voice and priorities of Zambia’s youth are represented and reflected in shaping a future-ready Pan-African Youth Union.
